Big Questions in Maths: A Sampler

A speed visit to two of big questions in mathematics.

Colourful Mathematics

Today we examine a question that has been puzzling people for thousands of years: colouring in. Yes, really! We help a map colourer and examine the Four Colour Theorem. Why is this important, and what is so tough about it?

Machines that Eat Your Words

Join us for a playful experimental approach to the mathematics of pattern recognition. Children begin by exploring a life-size finite state machine, and move on to developing rules for the machine, designing their own machines and experimenting with notations and different machines. This is a fun way to explore a complex topic in interdisciplinary mathematics, language and computer science.
